Perspire Soda?

Okay, as I’ve said before I’m a big fan of Jones Soda.  I was just the hawks game on Sunday and got a few samples of their delicious cream soda, which took me back to senior year of high school (Yea, I drank alot of Jones then).

Jones has never been one to pass on a weird tasting soda to get some pr.  A few years ago I bought their holiday pack which included Turkey, Smoked Salmon, Green Bean Casserole, and Pecan Pie.  Nobody wanted them with their Thanksgiving dinner, so a few weeks later I tried one of them.  It’s safe to say I didn’t drink the rest of the holiday pack.

Well to one up the holiday pack and to tie in their sponsorship of the Seahawks Jones Soday today announced their new “Seahawks Collector Pack” which includes these fine sodas

Dirt Soda, Sports Cream Soda, Perspiration Soda, Natural Field Turf Soda, and Sweet Victory Soda.

Mmmm, sounds delicious.  When two things you love combine to make something so horrible it just doesn’t seem right.

Business Idea.

Event planning for tailgaters.  Would it work?  I’m currently planning a tailgater this coming weekend and am having a good ammount of friends in from out of town.  I’m looking forward to hosting my friends, but if it weren’t for family in Corvallis, the logistics of planning this event would be very tough.

Could you setup an event planning business that specializes (or just add it to a major event planning companies services) in throwing tailgate parties.  Think about everything that could be worked out.  Places to stay, a mobile home rental, catered food, drinks, barbeques, tv’s, satleite dishes, music, decorations, etc.  The best part would be they could reserve spots close to the stadium early, get everything up and running, so all you need to do is roll into town, show up, and start tailgating.

I think it could work, but the key issue is that there are usually only six or seven home games in each city.  Makes it hard to cover your initial costs.  Why not launch it some major cities as a side business to your event planning business.  I know Seattle has some good event planning shops, and being ranked the worst tailgating city in the NFL having someone else take care of logistics for you could really help out our rankings.

What do you readers think?  Is it a business?  Would it work?

Glad I got out when I did…

Yes, of Canada.  Today is a day that when I went to school in Canada I never imagined would happen.  The USD (US Dollar) and the CDN (Canadian Dollar) are now even.  So much for taking cheap trips to Whistler, so much for going to school in Canada for the exchange rate, so much for equaling out the price of beer due to what it could cost back in the states.

Yes, when I went to school in Canada the exchange rate started at about $1USD=$1.55CDN, by the time I was finished it was about $1.40.  Now, a few years later there’s no difference.  It’s weird to think what a few years difference really makes.  I presumably wouldn’t have gone to Canada, maybe I would have been a Beaver or a Dawg, maybe California.  Who knows, but it’s something to ponder.

Well that trip to the 2010 Olympics sure is looking more and more expensive each day.

At the time of this story it is actually $1USD=.9994CDN (So a Loonie is worth morth than a George Washington)

Twitter changes users name

A service I once used alot, and could see myself using again, if more friends used it, is twitter.  Twitter, is a small tool that you post what you’re currently doing, and it sends the information out to your friends who are following your feed.  Nothing that useful until your friends get up to a critical mass.

One useful thing that has been done with twitter though, has been conference “casts” if you will.  A large conference called TechCrunch40 was going on the past two days, and a group of individuals got the twitter user name of techcrunch40.  Therefore people could follow their take on the conference, only problem for the conference was they were being honest, and mostly mocking the presenters and the conference itself.  Then randomly, after this twitter account had quite the following (almost 300 people in two days) Ev Williams, twitters founder, changed their name to nottechcrunch40.

That kind of thing might fly with your buddies, but if you’re trying to create a tool to be used by a critical mass you shouldn’t change a users name (not delete, change) because you don’t like what they are saying (Williams is on the board for TechCrunch40).  The users said nothing offensive, and although I was not at the conference, I would imagine many of the things said were true.  I agreed from what I had read online and what they were saying.

Ev has made alot of very smart moves (Blogger and Odeo) and I think twitter has the potential to be something very useful.  I hope to one day make a third of the great decisions Ev has made.  This move, however,  is something that should not happen if you’re trying to create something on a large scale.

The New York Times, setting the paper free.

In a move that I wasn’t sure I would see for at least a few more years, The New York Times is getting rid of their “Times Select” paid sections.  They are also releasing all of their archives for free online.  This is a huge move for the publishing industry that such an old media beheamouth would take away such a large chunk of gaurunteed income.

Fred Wilson, has previously stated that the Wall Street Journal should allow their online edition to be totally free (I’d say about 90% is for subscribers only) and I have had a hard time believing this would be worth it.  People are paying between $50-$70 to access the WSJ online and that is money you know is coming.  It has been there for years, and with the Journals market, it seems like it will be there for a long long time.  I mean, I’m 25 and I’m willing to pay for it.  The NYT says that the traffic they are now recieving through Google is worth more than the paid subscriptions.  If that is true, then there is no reason not to open up the WSJ.

We’ll see how long Ruper opens up the WSJ.  With the NYT move, I have a feeling I will be asking for some of my subscription money back soon.
