Best video yet Otis.

Great forward thinking/extrapalation on the local texting market. How can we capitalize on the inevitability of this market?

I would love to push a “dinner” button at about 4 oclock on friday here in SLU and then basically open myself up for restaurant/happy hour solicitations from eateries within 2 miles of me…a coupon for a free appetizer at McCormicks if 2 entrees are purchased…an offer for $2 off your first beer at Zeitoon in Belltown.

As for the company specific signups, like allowing starbucks to basically ping you with a $2 off a frap at 3 in the afternoon, I guess I could roll with that. Of course they will try to optimize their coupons to get the most business/money out of you, but who cares. You could make it a game to try to outsmart “big brother” into giving you more coupons.

This is probably more than just a “comment” at this point.

I’m still waiting for you to bust out an amazing tagline that would be comparable to Zoolander’s Blue Steel/Magnum — so powerful it could stop bullets. But take your time and then wham! Blow us away.

Thanks Aaron.

You’re actually in luck… I think. This sounds like what Whrrl will be doing. Check out this read by John Cook (http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/venture/archives/139515.asp)

On top of the coupons you can see what your friends have said about the restaurants or bars and see if any of them are there. At least that’s what it sounds like.

The hard part about these coupons, and all of this data, will be for the companies to figure out what to do with all of the data.

If the iPhone is only $200 (which some rumors are saying, but I doubt) I may have to give up the keyboard and go for it and try out all these location based services.

Otis, you on brightkite?

Lach,

I am on brightkite (otisk), but I haven’t updated or done anything on there. I don’t see myself updating my location that much without it taking care of everything for me. Maybe it will get to critical mass and I’ll use my blackberry to update it.

If the iPhone is $299 (which I doubt it will be) I may have to update to that, and then I will probably have brightkite auto-updated through GPS.

Do you have any thoughts about brightkite? Will it work without gps enabled phones?

Waah waah! You stand on your soapbox talking about how cool it will be when everyone’s updating, but then refuse to type a few extra characters into a message on your phone? Wtf, I thought that was why you got a crackberry?

I had heard about some sort of text based coupons and messages as you noted here, and I have asked my students about it. 95%+ of them noted that they would be more annoyed than overjoyed with constant messaging or pinging.

The key from my point of view is keeping it to a limited ping concept. Just because I want coupons for Wild Oats, which is 2 blocks away, does not mean I want coupons from every high end / organic-ish grocery and related store. It is easy to see the initial benefit until you are sick of the spam that fills up your inbox so to speak.

I look forward to more sports in the fall, and do you have any thoughts about a short interview or other neat stuff?

What about talking about viddler itself?

Cheers!

Here’s my 2 Cents.
I wouldn’t want to graze through my text messages et-al to find that there is a lure to get my attention.
With this overly-busy world, do you really want to be text to save 20 cents?

Marketing exhausts me.
This is a second revenue stream for selling your name to other like companies. What a mess that could create.
I’ve got other things to do then look at my Blackberry, Phone or PDA..

Usually there is a Starbucks on every corner, if I need one I can just walk up the street.

Cool concept, but poor use of personal infringement.

Otis
I am enjoying hearing and reading about the latest technology.
I am amazed how quickly it is changing and the new platforms that seem to be cropping up daily.

As an old fart, I appreciate you searching and digesting this “world” for me so I can logically understand and participate.

Love the site. Thanks….

A. Nancy
