Came across this great story today. The neighborhood of "Pike Place Market" was just named to the top ten list of best neighborhoods in the country by the American Planning Assosciation.

A few problems

Pike Place Market is a market not a neighborhood. It is in between the West Edge, Downtown, and Belltown neighborhoods. I think there’s only a single condo building in the market and I don’t think that can make up an entire neighborhood.

There is a picture in the article of "residents" enjoying Steinbrueck park. Umm, they’re either homeless (not a part of the neighborhood if you don’t have a home I guess?) or tourists. Again, this park is not a place that the residents hang out at.

Over 10 million people supposedly visit Pike Place Market every year. I live in Alki and get sick enough of the ammount of people that come here in the summer, I couldn’t imagine that the "residents" of the "Pike Place Market community" would really enjoy that many visitors if they did in fact live there.

I wonder how this list was created, how Pike Place became a neighborhood, and really if there was any local research done on this piece. Lake Oswego also was named one of the best neighborhoods. Way to represent NW.

Okay, as I’ve said before I’m a big fan of Jones Soda. I was just the hawks game on Sunday and got a few samples of their delicious cream soda, which took me back to senior year of high school (Yea, I drank alot of Jones then).

Jones has never been one to pass on a weird tasting soda to get some pr. A few years ago I bought their holiday pack which included Turkey, Smoked Salmon, Green Bean Casserole, and Pecan Pie. Nobody wanted them with their Thanksgiving dinner, so a few weeks later I tried one of them. It’s safe to say I didn’t drink the rest of the holiday pack.

Well to one up the holiday pack and to tie in their sponsorship of the Seahawks Jones Soday today announced their new "Seahawks Collector Pack" which includes these fine sodas

Dirt Soda, Sports Cream Soda, Perspiration Soda, Natural Field Turf Soda, and Sweet Victory Soda.

Mmmm, sounds delicious. When two things you love combine to make something so horrible it just doesn’t seem right.

A report from Tailgating.com came out listing all of the NFL cities and how good they are for tailgating. As no surprise to me Seattle was at the bottom of the list. Of course this does not take into account the Lake Washington tailgating that can be done for Husky games, that would definitely put us higher on the list, if only for how unique and scenic it is.

The raitings were based on going to Qwest, how late the parking lots open, how little parking and room there is for tailgating, and just the overall crowd experience. I will agree with this rating as I have been to many other places, including Corvallis, where the tailgating is much, much better, with far fewer and less rabid fans.

One of Bumbershoot’s largest advertising campaignes this year was how it was going to be such a green event. Here’s one line from their website, that was also plastered on many different posters around town:

We are pleased to announce a series of innovative and interactive strategies to make this year’s Bumbershoot the greenest ever!

Well from the looks and sounds of it, one of those strategies was not allowing water bottles into Memorial Stadium, the large concert stage used during the show. Maybe they’re using some "innovative" strategy here, but from the looks of it, it’s not that green.

I went to the Seahawks preseason game last night and had a great time. Seattle won, no Hawks were injured, and no starters looked horrible, that’s about all you can hope for in a preseason game.

It was fun to be back at Qwest and watching football in person. One thing that I was looking at, from a business side that had nothing to do with football, was how the new Jones Soda partnership would be working out. Something that I’ve never seen at a professional sports game before was sampling of the sodas that they sell inside the stadium. Jones does have a long way to go to make people comfortable buying their drinks as opposed to the well known sodas typically found in a stadium. I think it will take a little while for them to make people comfortable ordering a bright green, green apple soda, or a bright blue lemonade soda drink. I hope that it goes well for them and spreads to them earning more business outside of the stadium as well.

One unique observation that I heard at the game was, "They all taste like they would go well with alcohol, but not by themselves." Hmmm, another possibility for a partnership Jones?

It’s to late, and I can’t put together coherent sentences so I will link to a few roundups of the event.
