So this morning my hosting company Dreamhost sent me an email saying that they had billed me for the next year of web hosting, plus updating some domain names, and that my credit card had been billed. Well, I was at work so didn’t look into it much, but I thought I had been billed a few months ago and that I wasn’t due to pay for the service again for another nine month. Well a few hours later I found out I was right.

Dreamhost sent out an email, posted a blog entry, and many other blogs started writing about the mixup. The billing team at Dreamhost has taken a very non-chalant tone in all of their customer contact pieces, and they continued this tone, even in a HUGE mixup that they made. They actually billed $7.5M to customers today, which isn’t bad for a single day of billing I guess.

The honesty and humor was a perfect mix of being up front as well as keeping their same tone to keep me feeling good about hosting my domains with Dreamhost. A great company who I highly recommend… unless they triple bill you.

For a good reach check out their blog entry addressing the issue: Dreamhost Blog- “Um, Whoops”

Horizon Airlines, which is based out of Seattle, has decided to paint four of their planes to match the four major universities in Washington and Oregon. I’m most excited about the Beaver plane, and very uncertain how I would feel if they asked me to get on a duck plane. I know that there are people that give much more money than I do to their respective schools and I wonder how they would react to being asked to board their rival schools plane.

Now if I could request to fly from PDX to SFO on the Oregon State plane to watch the Emerald Bowl I would love it.

So is this a worth while marketing move by Horizon or will the painting and eventual repainting (and a few upset customers) be more than the stunt was worth? It shows that they’re a Northwest brand and says that they support the Northwest, but to me it seems to be a little to much effort for how uch positive PR it will produce. Of course, I don’t know how much painting a plane like this costs and maybe it’s not that big of an effort.

I feel that so many companies that are going green today, use it for the PR and not for the actual purpose of going gree. Here’s an example from this weekends Bumbershoot festival in Seattle.

One of Bumbershoot’s largest advertising campaignes this year was how it was going to be such a green event. Here’s one line from their website, that was also plastered on many different posters around town:

We are pleased to announce a series of innovative and interactive strategies to make this year’s Bumbershoot the greenest ever!

Well from the looks and sounds of it, one of those strategies was not allowing water bottles into Memorial Stadium, the large concert stage used during the show. Maybe they’re using some "innovative" strategy here, but from the looks of it, it’s not that green.

Again today Apples stock took a huge hit (7%!) when a rumor that turned out not to be true hit the inter-tubes. This time TheStreet.com reported that Apple was cutting back on their production of iPhones, thus causing people to panic and sell their stock.

This is remeniscent of the time that engadget reported a rumor on Apple delaying the iPhone and their new OS when the stocks took a huge hit, but quickly recovered.

Why is Apple such a volatile stock that goes up and down with the rumors so quickly? Is it because it’s so new? Because people love the company, but are always scared of the comeback kid and wondering if they are for real this time around? I don’t know, but it’s crazy that this has happened twice withing the past two and a half months.

It’s to late, and I can’t put together coherent sentences so I will link to a few roundups of the event.
